Frequently Asked Questions

The Naga Laut sets sail from Padang on the evening of your arrival, usually around 6 pm, or as soon as everybody has arrived. This gives you the entire day to make your way to Padang. A friendly Brotherhood Surf Adventures team member will meet you at the airport and guide you to the port—just under an hour’s drive away. If you get in early, no worries—we’ll take you to a hotel to chill out and freshen up before the adventure begins.

Once aboard, you’ve got 10 epic days of non-stop action ahead: surf until you drop, reel in some fish, snorkel vibrant reefs, explore the islands or just kick back and soak it all in!

On the final day, the Naga Laut docks back in Padang bright and early, around 5-6 am. Plan your flight home for after 9 am to give yourself enough time to pack (if you haven’t already), and we’ll make sure you’re at the airport with plenty of time to spare.

  • 3 boards is generally enough: I always recommend bringing 2 of your favorite all rounders. Then a few days before packing your boards for your trip, we will check the swell forecast for you and let you if you need to throw in a step-up, or a step-down.

  • In the first instance, your skipper holds a St Johns Senior First Aid Certificate as well as the Brotherhood Surf Adventures representative. Finally in the slim chance that you would need to be evacuated out, your travel insurance will cover you.

  • We communicate with other boats and shore bases in Padang via HF and VHF marine radio. The satellite phone +870 776 44 0873 is a Byru Marine model and operates via the stable ACES satellite network. It’s a good idea to note the sat phone number and leave it with someone at home in case you need to be contacted.

  • Depends on swell, winds, movements of other boats in the area and how fit you are! Some days you could easily find yourself having 3 sessions at one location. Other times it is possible to surf 3 different waves in a day.

  • In parts of the Northern area you will find 4 surfable waves in less than a mile radius. Other times it is a few hours steaming between breaks, most of which we do at night.

  • The people who run Naga Laut are also surfers and as such understand the level of appetite that develops after 3 or more hours of surfing. You will find the dishes served at main meals nutritious, varied and filling. And also delicious! We also make sure there is plenty of fruit available along with snacks such as biscuits and nuts. Some guests like to bring their own special snacks such as energy bars and protein drinks.

  • Yes, it is the shoulder season and is renowned to have good waves with a lot less people. We can help you with a variety of surfing aspects, ranging from the very basics—like improving your pop-ups, wave positioning, duck diving, and gaining speed—all the way up to working on your turns, barrels, rail and air game.

Coaching starts a few weeks before the boat trip, focusing on what you specifically want to work on. We’ll ensure you’re on the right equipment and help you understand the fundamentals of the maneuver you want to master.

While on board, we’ll continue the coaching experience with daily goals, as well as video and photo analysis. We’ll keep an eye on you while we surf together. After the session, we can sit down on deck with a cool drink, review how your session went, and provide friendly tips to fast-track your progress.

You may find that others on the boat are working on similar aspects of their surfing, which can also inspire and motivate you to push your skills to the next level in an understanding and supportive environment.

  • When planning your trip to Indonesia with Brotherhood Surf Adventures, it's important to secure the correct visa to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience. Here are the key points to know:

    1. Visa Types:

      • Visa on Arrival (VoA): Many nationalities are eligible for a 30-day Visa on Arrival, which can be extended for an additional 30 days. This is the most convenient option for short stays.

    2. How to Apply for a Visa:

      • For the VoA, you can apply online before arrival. This will make your arrival process faster and enable you to possibly use the electronic passport control and entry.

      • The official website to apply for Indonesian visas online is the Directorate General of Immigration: https://www.imigrasi.go.id.

      • For the Electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VoA) or other visa types, you can directly apply through the official eVisa platform: https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id/

    3. Documents You’ll Need:

      • A passport with at least 6 months' validity.

      • Proof of a return or onward ticket.

      • Sufficient funds for your stay.

    4. Important Tips:

      • Double-check the visa requirements for your nationality, as rules may vary.

      • Ensure your passport has at least two blank pages for stamps.

      • Keep a printed copy of your return flight ticket handy.

    5. Extending Your Stay:

      • If you enter on a VoA or visa and decide to extend, make sure to start the process at least a week before your visa expires. Extensions are handled at local immigration offices in Indonesia or online if you applied online initially.
